Team Lovelace was founded in September 2022 after a lot of debate. We were initially unsure whether forming an all-girls team was right for us. We knew that as girls in STEM, we would be in a male-dominated field for most of our lives and were unsure whether an all-girls environment, at this point in our science experience, would end up being a disadvantage or advantage to us later down the road.
After many discussions between the girls on the team, the coaches, our families, and friends we were fully committed to forming Team Lovelace. We recognized that we need, more than anything, experience and confidence, and those would be best built in an all-girls environment. In this environment we don't need to fight to be heard and valued, and we are able to step up and take bigger leadership roles which we weren't able to do in years prior.
Every member of the team has learned a lot and grown considerably through this process. Our passion for STEM has exploded as we've learned about the women who have paved the way for girls in STEM, about career opportunities in STEM, and just by being in an environment of other young women who are excited when they learn Java, or successfully use physics to create a self-leveling claw.
Team Lovelace is really proud of what we have created: a strong sense of community, an inclusive and welcoming environment for all girls in STEM, and a place for growth and passion.
Member Testimonials:
“Being on Team Lovelace has opened the door to robotics for me. Prior to being on the team, I knew nothing beyond using a screwdriver, however, now I helped build a chassis! Part of this is owed to the welcoming community. Team Lovelace has never judged any questions I have had.”
- Abby Macklin 10th grade, Mechanical team, Rookie
"Being on a team with all girls has allowed me to feel welcomed and respected. I was able to meet new people and learn about new people who look like me and pursue careers that will one day change our world.”
-Sydney Hawkins, 10th grade, Coding team, 2nd year FTC
